Recent home projects have served as reminders of the importance of obtaining references for tradespeople (if a larger project I would suggested a minimun of 3). Also ensure you ask for a quote, an outline of work to be done and a projected schedule for job completion.  Trade estimates can vary wildly sometimes even in the 1000s of dollars!
